Meditation, Prayers, and Assorted Stuff for July 10, 2020

Henri Nouwen, Bread for the Journey, “Listening with Our Wounds”

To enter into solidarity with a suffering person does not mean that we have to talk with
that person about our own suffering. Speaking about our own wounds is seldom helpful to
someone who is in pain. A wounded healer is someone who can listen to a person in pain
without having to speak about his or her own wounds. When we have lived through a
painful depression, we can listen with great attentiveness and love to a depressed friend
without mentioning our experience. Mostly it is better not to direct a suffering person’s
attention to ourselves. We have to trust that our own bandaged wounds will allow us to
listen to others with our whole being. That is healing.

Today’s prayer is from “Fuerillas of Grace” by Ted Loder.

I Remember Now In Silence

Lord,
plunge me deep into a sense of sadness
at the pain of my sisters and brothers
inflicted by war,
prejudice,
injustice,
indifference,
that I may learn again to cry as a child
until my tears baptize me
into a person who touches with care
those I now touch in prayer:
victims of violence,
of greed,
of addictions,
prisoners in poverty,
in old age,
in sexism,
people with broken bodies,
with broken hearts,
with broken lives,
whom I remember now in silence before you
because I have too often forgotten them
in the shuffle of my fretful busy-ness. Amen

Dad Jokes

I won an award for most secretive person at work. I can’t tell you how this makes me feel.

How many beers does it take to get a bird drunk? Toucans.

Oh No! I just burnt my Hawaiian pizza! I should have put the oven on aloha temperature.
